Agrestic is right on a point. There is a huge distinction between supporting good police, which is something most people want (and for excellent reasons) vs supporting people who violate the rights of others only because they are police. Remember thst bad cops not only hurt citizens through their violence but also create conditions that hurt good officers, add stress to an already difficult job, and further undermine community relations. So, bad cops also hurt good officers. On the other hand, i can also see a way in which Olongopojoe is correct, too. The people who are failing to see nuances and who are clumping others into categories are not only individuals who are doing racial profiling, but also the individuals who are lumping all police together and failing to recognize that when studied, the portion engaging in such acts is a minority among the police. I think that Olongopojoe is worried about those who forget this. Both are in dome ways the

dang, my bad eye had me miss-hit and i sent prematurely.Anyway, i was saying that both are in some ways the SAME problem. When people fail to see and appreciate individuals of any group AS INDIVIDUALS, but instead use the shortcut of assuming that some characteristic, opinion, or whatever must apply to all, in this case either with black males OR with police then there is not a lot of good that can come of it, especially since shortcut category assumptions tend to so often be negative. So, yeah, let’s be fair, but let’s try to be fair to both groups. Back in the 60s ans 70s when those of us who were young were trying to get progress in the world some people argued that having so many groups stand up for their own rights would detract, but the opposite turned out to be true because the ultimate message, that we all deserve equal rights and respect came through. Isn’t that ultimately as it should be?

Yes, you are right, both about the department culture problems in many areas, and about the dangers of militarizing police.

There is a great Battlestar Galactica quote:

There is a reason you separate military and police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both then the enemies of the state tend to become the people
