Looks like Snoopy is acting as “throwback” umpire, as in the old days the umpire did indeed stand behind the pitcher. The term “pitcher” itself came from the underhand style of throw they used to use, like pitching horseshoes.
If it would’ve been a strike, whoever was at bat would’ve hit a line drive that knocked Charlie Brown over, and sent all of his clothes flying………

No wonder Snoopy plays shortstop, Charlie Brown doesn’t agree with his calls as umpire.
Looks like a couple firsts here. First time Snoopy is involved in baseball and the first time Charlie Brown pitches.
