Alice: There's a bird who lives in the grocery store! Petey: There are lots of them in this store... Petey: They've been here so long, they've developed regional characteristics. Petey: Those who live in the snacks aisle are fat and lethargic. Petey: The birds in the coffee aisle are never still. Petey: Those in the cereal aisle have gaudy, unnaturally hued plumage. Petey: Birds in the ice cream aisle have grown fur. Petey: And those in the diary aisle have a distinctive call. Alice: Ha! And I thought nature was boring! Petey: Nature's most interesting when it's indoors.

I sometimes notice birds in my grocery store’s rafters.

Domesticated Nature is the easiest kind to which one can relate! But Petey’s folk-ornithology may be suspect in scientific circles….

And they all vacation at the home improvement store, on the bird seed aisle..The best indoor birds I ever saw were in the shop building at Loudoun County’s vocational school.. From late spring through early fall, the big bay doors were usually left open by day.The building had really high ceilings. The rafters were full of hummingbird nests. On almost any given day, you could look up and watch the ruby-throats dance.

We frequently have a pair Carolina wrens nesting in our utility/laundry room out in the garage. The nest in on a shelf, directly over the utility sink. They reuse the same nest, over and over. It happens once or twice per year. It’s been going on long enough that it can’t be the same pair.

There’s a hawk living in my local Home Depot… cured the mice and rat problem, but I now wear a hat when I go there.

Petey seems to have inherited his father’s proclivity for creative instructionalism.

Wrens are notorious for nesting in and near human habitations. They like to use our artifacts to build their nests in/on.

A few years ago, the Walmart near where I lived got invaded by a flock of ravens. I am not sure how long it took them to get all the birds out, the ravens were flying around in the store for at least several days.

We had a nesting duck in our local Home Depot store. She stayed there until her ducklings could get out. She came back the next year, but the people coming to the store just to see her, in the outdoor department, of course, were too much and she got reloacated somewhere else.
