Many kids do have a hard time with that style of clock….Digital clocks tell you the time. The old style, circular clocks, you have to read…How can a 1 represent 5 minutes? Half passed 4? Is it 1:45 or quarter to 2? It really does seem overly complicated to them…

When digital watches first became popular, and someone asked you the time and the watch said 1:38, did you actually say 1:38, or “about 20 to two”?Myself, I had to have both hands free to consult the time, since I needed the other hand to shade the watch face from the sunlight (LED display).

Cursive became obsolete with the invention of the ballpoint pen.

Cursive is what almost every important document is written in, think they might want to be able to read the orignal declarition, how about the constitution of the us. Going to trust politicians and others to translate it into print for you? doubt its obsolete just yet :)

Dave Allen did a great skit on teaching a young person to read time.

Schools should still teach cursive. http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/04/30/should-schools-require-children-to-learn-cursive/the-benefits-of-cursive-go-beyond-writing

Is this an ad for that clock? It shows 10:10 – which is the time all analog watches show in print ads. (Some adman suit decided years ago that it was the most “sellable” time).

Geoff Baines said:“If cursive isn’t taught, how will todays kids be able to sign for UPS/Fed-Ex/Amazon deliveries, or student loan applications, or divorce papers?”

Simple. You do what doctors do, and simply put an illegible scribble where the “signature” goes. ;-)

I just saw a watch – and I’m pretty sure it’s legit – with 24 hours on the dial and only one hand. The ad called it the slow watch. Pretty col concept there and here.

I saw a signature once that was just a line that looped in the middle.

Yeah, that’s a great attitude for a teacher to have. Heaven forbid the little darlings actually know a useful life skill when they get out of your class — so much better to feel good about themselves.

Print is a mechanical or electronic reproduction technique. The opposite of cursive is uncial.
