As I unloaded the lumber, my wife asked,
“Whatcha making?
A woodshed.”
“Ya got blueprints?”
“Naw, it’s just a box.”
“Betcha it don’t work.”
“Shut up and make dinner”
To this day that woodshed stands, one side higher than the other and the roof not quite meeting the front.. She may laugh and say I told you so, but that marvel of engineering has kept my wood dry. IKEA, humph!
Mea culpa! I apologize. I am doubly chastened because I didn’t see your last post on Sunday. If I had, I would surely have gone back and checked instead on relying on memory. I won’t doubt you again.
Ginger is branching out. Over the years he has endorsed a brand of petrol, margarine, motor car and soft drink to name just those of which I have samples - there would surely be more. A doghouse from IKEA may be a good idea; it would be possible to bring it home flat in the car boot or on the back seat. They are available in pet shops but how does one get them home? Answer: buy a roofrack for the car - twice the price of the doghouse.
You thought of it first Ginger.
Joe Those mimeograph machines had a master that was typed in a typewriter with a sort of carbon paper behind it but back to front so that the carbon copy appeared back to front on the master. The copypaper received a very small coating of a fluid that consisted mainly of methylated spirits with some other unknown chemical in it. It was then pressed against the master which was on a turning drum where the fluid dissolved a tiny portion of the back-to-front image which, in turn, stained the copy paper with an image around the right way.
As a young fella, I worked in an office that used one of these as part of an extensive system. Muggins here spilt the fluid as I put it inrto the machine and it went into the packet of this special carbon paper. It then trickled down the front of the filing cabinet where a bit went into each drawer and put purple stains on documents. Talk about smell, the whole office must have had a bad hangover for days.
Lonewolf Yes, they kept the metho smell. At one time I bought a small typing and duplicating firm that had one of those machines. I never used it because Xerox machines were just coming into their own - around 1975.
In front of me right now are two clippings from 2001 where Ginger started to get involved in a promotion for Australian manufacturers. Drawings by James Kemsley.

Hi Jason, Joe, Dry, Lonewolf, Barb, Bjorn and all Meggsie fans
Ginger, I think you have Dad a bit nervous about his lack of woodworking talent, he’s starting to stutter. Betcha y’all missed it.
Joe Was a mimeograph the machine we called a spirit duplicator here in Oz? Did it give a purple print? If so, then the smell was methylated spirits.
More chores, late dinner, back later.
See ya’.

I was in school and that’s when I remember those machines. That smell was from the papers that were handed out to us.

Good evening Joe
I owned a ‘63 Ford Falcon Sprint for about 6 years when I was in my 20s. Pretty much stock except for the wheels and tires.
