Flowery oratory he [Walpole] despised. He ascribed to the interested views of themselves or their relatives the declarations of pretended patriots, of whom he said, ”All those men have their price.”
- William Coxe, Memoirs of Walpole
(vol. IV, p. 369)
Reminds me of Mel Brooks as the 2000 year old man. When he is asked if he met Robn Hood, he says he has and that the image of the man is incorrect. He says that Robin stole from the rich, stole from the poor and kept everything.

It’s not “Every man has his price”. It’s:
Flowery oratory he [Walpole] despised. He ascribed to the interested views of themselves or their relatives the declarations of pretended patriots, of whom he said, ”All those men have their price.” - William Coxe, Memoirs of Walpole (vol. IV, p. 369)

Thanks for the historical clarification, runar. Evidently people have gotten more cynical between then and now. Or have they?
Here’s another blast from the past that gave rise to a somewhat different modern idiom:
Canis timidus vehementius latrat quam mordet - A timid dog barks more violently than it bites. (Curtius Rufus)
