Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for February 28, 2015

Transcript:
Arlo says, "Well, if it isn't ol' Felis the Catus!"
Arlo says, "I remember when the scientific name for cats was 'Felis Domestics'!"
Arlo says, "You guys must have some lobby!"
As a nerdy kid, I looked up Latin species names in a dictionary and was struck by the following distinction:Dog: Canis Domesticus Cat: Felis FamiliusDogs were domesticated, but cats were merely familiar.
I feel the same way. The rule used to be the first to describe it scientifically, got to name it. Since Felis domesticus was Linneaus’ term and he invented binomial nomenclature, his name should pertain. .ChukLitl: Feral doesn’t matter. Domesticating a Procyon lotor does not change its species, nor does the opposite.
Hate to break your bubble Arlo, but it’s now “F. silvestris catus” (for hippogriff, DNA analysis trumps even Linnaeus names — so dog is now “Canis lupus familiaris” and the dingo is “Canis lupus dingo”)
prasrinivara: Well dog my cats! Linnaeus distinguished between the housecat and its ancestral European wild cat. Genetics have borne him out in this case, so why downgrade his work? Ego?

“Domesticus” sometimes isn’t accurate.

Hmm, “Felis Catus” sounds like a good name for a cartoon cat. English translation: “Felix the Cat”…

Canis lupus lupus (Gray Wolf) Canis lupus famliaris (domestic dog) Canis lupus familiaris, sub. var. Yorkshire Terrier
They all have a good lobby. My 5 pound Yorkie likes remind me that there is a 125 pound alpha male wolf trapped in his body.
