Coming Soon đ At the beginning of April, youâll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Gâday Jason, Dry, Lonewolf, Barb, Joe, Bjorn and all Meggsieâs mates.
Gee Benny, you have to experience eating foods before you know if you are allergic to them or not. Please donât tell me you did what I did at your age, please tell me you didnât. If I get to France I certainly hope that escargots are not part of every dish.
Dry So you noticed.. Yes, I use it as a sort of sign off line but itâs true. Events here have meant Iâm chief cook and bottle washer under instruction.. Where I am, Meggsie sometimes (most times) arrives right on my dinner time. The soup tonight was pea soup with a smoked ham hock. I donât want to be greedy but if I shared it with all Meggsieâs mates it would have to be like the loaves and fishes thing.
Yes, agree, the graffiti is a buzz.
Ginger is getting quite a few goodies as bribes. In past years he always missed out badly when he tried to get something other kids had or to share in their good luck in finding a shilling for instance.
I love pea soup with ham hocks! I assume you used the dry peas to make it?
I use ham hocks in a little dish from the Pennsylvania Dutch called ham pot pie (bott boi). Very tasty dish, I love it, itâs one of my comfort foods, but to do it right, it takes some work!
Of course, Only the best dry, green split peas go in my soup. Definitely will not use the ones that require no pre-soaking, they produce a goo with no texture.
Unfortunately, our local Dutch Shop does not stock ham hocks but it does have other goodies not available elsewhere. Not keen on the salted licorice however.
My late mother-in-law and me shared a mutual disdain for each other but, bless her heart, she gave herself away by making the occasional steak and kidney pudding when we visited her. The work and time involved with such a true delicacy betrayed her real feelings about me.
If only I could sign off by saying I have to go because her steak and kidney pudding awaits.
Salted licorice? Eww! I love salt and I love licorice, but not together!
The secret to the pot pie is the pot pie squares and the broth from the ham and potatoes. Yumm!
Our Pennsylvania Dutch are of German decent, not Holland, although I do believe some of them originally came from there. The PA Dutch have a dialect all their own, as do most of the different sects of Amish and Old Order Mennonite.
What goes into steak and kidney pudding? Is it like Scrapple or Souse?.
AHAH - Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdie, your eyes light up and your tummy says âhowdyâ. Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdie, canât get enough of that wonderful stuffâ.
It may have been, I honestly could not tell you. All I know of Jo Stafford is that my parents really liked her! Do you know of Minnie Pearl?
Well shoo fly pie is a pie made of molasses with a crumb topping. The Shoo Fly, so the legend goes came about from the cook saying âShoo Fly, get off my pie!â
And Whoopie pies are cakes that are round, about 4-6 inches in diameter, with a white cream filling in the center and made into a sandwich. Now a days, the filling is of different flavors, like peanut butter, banana cream, etc. and the cookie can be white, pumplin, whatever, but the original whoopie pie was choclate with white cream filling.
Canât find it but I play her records a lot so it could ber in those hundreds still out of the rack.. Came across her capitol 78 recording of âOn London Bridgeâ. True magic. Can be found on YouTube. In my mind it was her best.
Oh dear, straying from the subject. I do hope some solid citizen with a self-appointed role of keeping us on the straight and narrow doesnât remind me.

Youâve won me. Please excuse a delay while I book a flight. What is the address of that Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant?
Dry and Dusty Premium Member almost 15 years ago

Who sang that? Was it Jo Stafford?.
Dry and Dusty Premium Member almost 15 years ago
I have no idea who sang that! Sounds to me like a Minnie Pearl song! So you know some PA Dutch dishes, eh?
usfellers almost 15 years ago
No, to my detriment I donât, just recognised the song. Going through my Jo Stafford 78s right now. Feel sure it was her.

Googled it. Yes, she did.

Looks like comments got a bit out of sync. All the delicacies you mention make it imperative I try them all out on my intended globe-trot one day.
Bed awaits, a long night shortened by bright comments from friends must now end. Bed, not an overcooked steak, awaits..

Sleep well my friend! (and itâs only 6 pm here!)

Thank you, itâs been fun.
