Mice or ‘possums? It’s difficult to tell, because the proportions change between the first panel and the third. The ball in the last panel seems smaller in relation to Sophie’s head than in the first panel, but even so they’re either really small ‘possums or really HUGE mice.
(Splitting the difference might suggest they’re rats, but it’s understandable that we’d all be hesitant to entertain that possibility.)

They do kind of look more like opossums than mice.
