On the 1971 children’s TV show “Curiosity Shop”, there was a puppet named “Onomatopoeia” who spoke no words, only sounds like “ring” and “bang” and “knock” and such. That’s where I first learned the word.
Fun fact: In addition to having an episode (or portion thereof) written by Ray Bradbury, the writing credits on IMDb include cartoonists Johnny Hart, Brant Parker, and Mel Lazarus.
