I think they’re supposed to be chocolate rabbits…Strips are drawn in black and white, except for Sundays…
As most cartoonists would, Mark probably made these bunnies black to show that they’re dark…e.g, so they won’t look like white rabbits in the newspapers that run the strip in black and white….
even though it means the syndicate colorists can’t make them chocolate brown for online display, or for newspapers that buy the colored version.
And just in case Peeps are not available world wide (Oh, the horror!)and some of you have the misfortune of being unfamiliar with the sugary marshmallows and bunnies that define Easter for some of us….
