Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for April 17, 2015
Transcript:
Goat: Have you ever noticed how people have limitless capacity to lie to themselves about who they really are and how others see them? Rat: I think everyone realizes that. Goat: I'm not sure people are that self-ware. Rat: Hang on. I'll poll my subjects. Silence, commoners! Goat: Please sit down.

If Rat wants to play king, I’ll do my part and set up the guillotine.

Rat, the perfect example of someone who lies to themselves about who they really are and how others see them. Pig’s the only one who fails to see Rat for the obnoxious jerk he really is. But that’s only because Rat takes advantage of Pig’s naivete to con him into not seeing the truth about himmost of the time.

Rat, an un-self-aware self-liar? Appalling. Certainly the rest of us would never do anything like that!

I am not sure if I get it. Could someone please explain this one to me? Why does Rat say “Hang on, I’ll poll my subjects?” And then does the clapping?

reminds me of a guy i knew in college who thought every girl was in love with him – sometimes it made for hilarious interaction – sometimes it made for some terrific put downs – but he always took it in stride and never seemed to believe they didn’t like him

I would disagree with the no remorse part. He has remorse, but it’s a gnawing distress arising from a sense of guilt for past wrongs he believes he’s done to himself. Being a narcissist, any sense of remorse Rat would feel would be directed at himself alone.
Well, maybe I should correct that. We did see that recent strip where they were in the bar and Rat was so drunk that he was actually kind. Which led pig to say that Rat should get drunk more often. He could probably feel remorse for others when he’s that drunk.
