A different kind of “passing out parade” frequently occurred in “Catch 22.” In weather ranging from incredibly hot to infernal, the poor blighters (sorry, wrong war!) were forced to parade around until enough of them had passed out from the heat that the entire thing could be called a rousing failure.
Most civilians, especially Americans, think the word “parade” only means marching down the street with a band, but in actual military life it means all sorts of things involving troops gathering together.
