It’s why women’s blouses button in the opposite direction to men’s shirts, it’s from the time that women of a certain “class” had maids to help them dress, even if it was a child/teenager employee. In Mary Reilly, Julia Roberts says that her mother put her into servitude when she was ten or twelve, I can’t remember. I’m not talking just the upper classes, middle-class families could afford a housekeeper and maybe a child-worker. For some, it was starvation on the streets or working hard for a, hopefully, nice family which meant three hots and a cot.

Unfortunately, I have too many pairs of cuff links that just don’t quite make it through the cuff and it takes three or four hands to secure them: me trying to compress the material with one hand while my wife tries to flip the toggle on the link (the fourth hand, of course, being in the sleeve).
