Briffits and grawlix, according to Mort Walker, who (with his colleagues, no doubt) codified and named many cartoon conventions [Wikipedia had it, I believe]. Plewds are the little flying sweat beads. They’re not in this strip, but they’re my favorite, so.
Mort Walker didn’t invent them, but he wrote a text explaining and naming them. It is quoted extensively in the fine book, “American Cornball, a Laffopedic Guide to the Formerly Funny” by Christopher Miller.
