    There isn’t even ice at the NORTH POLE right now! I really don’t see the harm, and it would bring such joy to the ancient mariner

    Yes there is ice at the north pole right now, albeit at lower than usual levels; on the other hand there is record high ice levels at the south pole. go figure.http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

    You’re right, the captain wasn’t on duty. When the ship hit the iceberg the Captain was entertaining his guests at the captain’s table. The whole mess was a group effort, from the Lookouts who didn’t spot the iceberg, to the radio operator who ignored the ice warnings coming over the wireless so he could continue to transmit the “important” messages from the passangers, to the watch officer who took the wrong actions when they spotted the iceberg and tried to avoid it.
