If Jarosław Kaczyński is really going to replace his late twin brother Lech Kaczyński for the Presidency of Poland, I hope no one will mistakingly think Jarosław is Lech back from the grave.

    Just speaking on twins here.

    Gday all!!

    Indeed! It’s Meggsie’s Doppelganger, Pierrot!

There’s a bit of a story behind this: Meggs used to run in French (in Montreal) in the 1930’s - he went by the name “Pierrot!”

G’day Jason, Joe, Dry, Barb, Lonewolf, Bjorn and all Meggsie’s mates.

Last 4 comments have taken at least 4 hours to show here.

YES!!! Ginger’s French Doppelganger last turned up in 1931 and there are examples of his exploits right here on my desk

Looks like doppelgangers have the gift of eternal youth too. This strip has left me gobsmacked.

    Hi Joe.

Ginger is not only a virtual reality version of when we were his age but he also embodies the current thinking of contemporary kids. Surely, he is a prime example of the more things change, the more they stay the same because future generations will see him in the same light.

Now if I only knew French, very nice to see the strip in a Montreal newspaper from that long ago, never the less.

Now would one of you Aussies tell me what gobsmacked means?

Is Doppelganger an Australian slang word, also? Pardon my ignorance, but I never heard the term before.

Oh, wow, not sure if we have strictly Aussie terms here or just ones we recognise from other sources.

Am sure gobsmacked is actually an Americanism meaning something stronger than merely being taken aback. Without resorting to a lengthy Google search, a Doppleganger (German derivation???) is a double of ones-self but with a different/delinquent/free-as-one-would-wish, soul. Now, before anyone starts saying that is wrong, please give a little thought that some words are not directly translatable from one language to another.

    Gday Dry,

Gobsmacked is an old saying referring to being so shocked it’s akin to being ‘smacked in the gob’ - gob, of course being slang for ‘mouth’.

For any terms you may be unfamiliar with, feel free to have a browse through the Aussie dictionary: http://www.aussievault.com.au/aussie-dictionary/default.aspx

Thank you very much for both the Aussie Dictionary Link and the larger version of today’s strip! That was very nice of you.

    Usfellers

I know I have said this through emails, but I want to say here how nice you have been in sending us the scanned copies of older Us Fellers/Ginger Meggs cartoon strips and how much it is appreciated. Your emails are sent from the heart and it is definitely something special me. I enjoy reading your posts and the replies of Jason in reference to the differences between the slang dialect in our two countries. It is very enlightening.

    Thank you, BG.

Just something in the tradition of irrelevant subjects:

Even though I am an Aussie I went to Jason’s link of the Aussie dictionary. In browsing through and having a giggle at some of our sayings I came across’down the gurgler’ which means something has has ‘gone down the drain’ - gone and lost forever.

Many (too many) years ago I had considered buying a tape recording unit and go around recording the gurgle of water as it disappeared down wash-basin drains in guest houses (who remembers them.). It was a most singular sound unheard in any other circumstance. Before I got around to it somebody appeared in the news where they had already done just that.

It was so long ago that it was even before vinyl discs and tape machines were cumbersome reel-to-reel units. Has anyone out there in cyberland any information on this project?

Eh? Yes, I’m serious, in a light-hearted sort of way.

Jason thank you for the dictionary, and I sort of thought that is what gobsmacked meant, but wasn’t sure, LOL!

Joe and usfellers as always, you are both very interesting! Thank you too for such interesting comments!
