I think sue actually is wondering the opposite: how to get naturally straight hair to become an afro, and keep it that way. My guess is a good deal of chemicals and heat are involved. Funnily enough, it generally takes a lot of chemicals and heat to go the opposite way too—straightening naturally curly hair. I agree with sue: seems like too much trouble in either direction.
