You look up ‘ichneumon’ and it doesn’t get you anywhere to the mythology, so instead I will quote its entry from The Bestiary by Jonathan Hunt: “Ichneumons lived along the Nile River in Egypt. They hated serpents and crocodiles and never passed up an opportunity to attack either one. Often a crocodile would fall asleep on the riverbank with its mouth full of fish, attracting the trochilus bird, which would clean out the crocodile’s mouth. When the huge jaws gaped wide, the ichneumon would dart down the crocodile’s throat and gnaw out its belly.”

How doth the little crocodile Improve his shining tail, And pour the waters of the Nile On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin How neatly spreads his claws, And welcomes little fishes in, With gently smiling jaws!
