    It stays in the same orbit, but the orbit is eccentric so that sometimes Pluto is closer to the sun than Neptune is, so it’s said to be inside Neptune’s orbit. End of lesson.

    Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune between February 7, 1979 and February 11, 1999. It is now farther from the sun than Neptune, and will remain so for more than 200 years.
