Maybe the definition should be exactly two sides. That would rule out hot dogs, which is ok by me; but pita sandwiches would also disappear. I don’t think I could handle that easily (so to speak).
One night in 1762 when an English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. He wanted something to eat with one hand so that he could still play. He apparently had the meat put on slices of bread so he wouldn’t get his fingers greasy while he was playing cards. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited that quick-food product that we now know as the sandwich. So – you have to be able to hold it with one hand –no greasy fingers, AND hold a winning poker hand in the other!

Of such compromises are great marriages made.

I think they are overdue for a vacation in the Sandwich Islands.

But…but…chowder in a bread bowl fails the definition in the second panel: “…the eater must be able to easily pick it up.”

You can pick up a bread bowl full of chowder. Just don’t start eating it from the bottom.

I think the key to BuzzDog’s comment is the word “easily”.
