Goat: Hey, Rat, do you want to have dinner with the Smiths and me tonight? They're the ones who just got married. Rat: I can't. I never bought them a wedding gift. Goat: That's okay. Tradition says you have a years after the wedding to get them something. Rat; I know. So if I wait a year and a day, I don't have to get them squat. I'm big on tradition.

Did the Smiths’ invite Rat to the wedding?

Rat would probably have gone if they’d had an open bar.

Never heard of that tradition. Must have been started by a newly married couple who got some bad gifts from people and wanted to not only return them but get those people to give them better gifts.

…And if they divorce before a year do I get my gift back?

Wait. Was Goat going to pick up Rat’s check, since he invited him? Did Rat just miss out on a free dinner? (Forget the Smiths; they’ll surely forget Rat.)

Etiquette says gifts are only mandatory at showers (because the purpose is to get gifts). Weddng gifts are not mandatory. I once got a gift for people I didn’t know (friends of the hubby’s, who couldn’t be bothered) after being told it was a small wedding (second for her) and thinking that they wouldn’t get many gifts. It was a HUGE wedding, standing room only, with elaborate gifts piled on a table in the back of the church. After waiting 45 minutes in line to get into the reception, we gave up and went home. So, folks, I am not big on big weddings OR wedding gifts.
