Heh. Is this a strip even the “white rights” folks can get behind?
Of course, “non-Hispanic whites” haven’t been the majority in California for a while, and they even lost the title of most numerous race/ethnicity to Latinos in 2014. Which of course makes a lot of white folks nervous. For those prone to such anxiety, keep this in mind: everyone we are talking about is, in fact, human. And while cultural differences can sometimes feel profound, genetic differences between groups are negligible.
On another note, “minority” has more than simply numerical population meanings. And it’s very possible for a numerically smaller population to dominate and oppress a larger population. See: apartheid South Africa; then-Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe); then-South-West Africa (now Namibia); and pretty much every country that underwent colonialism. Also see: rich folks making it harder for everyone else in these great United States (and all over the world)—for instance, small numbers of white agribusiness owners hiring large numbers of Latino laborers for poverty wages.
Lalo please being such a racist by constantly judging people by the color of their skin. Do you classify President Fox of Mexico, Govern Richardson of New Mexico, singer Debra Carr etc. as non Mexican because of the color of their skin or do you go by the spelling of their name. If so does that mean that Jeb Bush’s wife is not Mexican?
Interesting hypothesis. Wouldn’t it be great if we humans put as much energy into mitigating the effects of extinction-level events rather than figuring out ways to create new ones?
PS: Fair warning everyone, The Road is incredibly depressing reading. Excellent, but right up there with Coetzee in being able to effectively bring you down.
When I am asked about my race, I answer that the question is not applicable because I am not a racist. If more people would take this attitude most of the racist problem would away.
When my parents and grand parents moved to this country from Mexico during the great depression, it was difficult. I remember my aunt using her lunch money to buy a typewriter. Now amongst my 18 cousins we have 12 with bachelor, Master or PhD’s and one Doctor(my daughter). I have two Masters.
The reason is that we never bought into the Idea that we were victim of racism, We just did our thing and thing turned out great.
