Not actually certain, but I think this is just a running gag Myers does of Broom Hilda wearing the USMC boxers shorts since I first started reading this comic in 1973.
I remember several years ago when I bought some Iron free pants that were supposed to be chemically treated so you didn’t have to iron them. They fit great, but every single one of them wore out in the crotch within three weeks. I’ve always wondered if there was something wrong with the chemical process, or if the chemicals were reacting with the chemicals in my sweet.
