I’ve read Canterbury Tales. There are stories in it that are not suitable for a pre-teen. There are some really funny stories,too. Pity it’s so hard to read the antique English.
The basic problem with understanding poetry is that it is meant to be spoken aloud. There is a lot of emphasis and allusion that is lost in speed-reading. I have the same problem with song lyrics.
