The overt racism expressed in some of these old strips is difficult to accept. Perhaps the GoComics overlords should write a new heading … with very careful wording ???
Can’t say I agree. It’s always a danger to try to sanitize history. The casual racism might not be pretty, but pretending it wasn’t there isn’t a good option, either.
Sanitizing history has strange side effects. Remember the Tom & Jerry cartoons where “Mammy Two-Shoes” was replaced by an Irish housekeeper? Sometimes the voice was changed and the legs (all we ever saw of her) were still black.
Leave everything in, footnote when necessary. Those who forget their own past…

It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden cop at the end.

It doesn’t get much better than this. I truly envy those who are seeing these for the first time. Thanks Peter!

It reminds me of some old New Yorker cartoons and covers. I wonder if Mr. Maresca illustrated for that publication.
