I knew a woman who opened a coffee shop with no real business plan besides: 1. Make coffee, 2. ???, 3. Profit! By the time she realized she would have to sling more than a thousand cups a month to meet expenses, she was in too deep. Her biggest month was a little over 400. The worse part? She mortgaged her home to capitalize the business.

A produce store opened nearby on Monday. Went on Wednesday and it was closed. My thought is many open a business thinking that people will come in put money on counter and leave. Another food place opened, the woman spent a week decorating. You bought prepackaged food. Service was horrible, food had mold, but it was decorated nicely!

While it’s great to have a dream, it’s also great to have some business sense. Too many people, and too many lending institutions, don’t focus on the practical side. That’s why the overwhelming majority of small businesses fail within the first five years.

I’ve had my own computer consulting business for more than thirty years. The key to success is to give good service at a reasonable price and keep your overhead at a minimum.

Awwww………sorry about so many businesses going down the tubes. We try to patronize the new places, especially the Mom & Pop’s.

We had a few long-standing restaurants and shops go out of business in the last few years—due to the lack of unskilled labor since the oil companies hired everyone who showed up at half again (or twice) the salary.

A local owner said the responsible delivery drivers were the ones who arranged to get his truck back to his place after they were hired at the rigs.
