Personally, the Odyssey is only good if you have the right teacher to get you interested in it. If my 9th and 12th grade English teacher (yup, same teacher both years, I suppose some high schools may be able to afford an English teacher for every year of high school, we weren’t one of them) had been the one responsible for teaching it to us I would have probably wanted to dump it in the trash. Thankfully my 10th Grade English teacher was the right kind of teacher for it.
I didn’t get to read any of those for school studies…I read two of them on my own, but I didn’t study them…Just as well. Studying books ruined them for me.
I was great at my senior prom. (50 years ago) Got dumped later by the my guy for a blonde, college co-ed he met his first month there. She blinded him with Science…or something….
Schools are forced to spend their time getting students ready to take a year-end multiple choice test now, so there is no time for that. If they are lucky, they might get “The Odyssey.” But “Lord Jim” and “Bleak House?” No chance.
My senior prom was in 1966. I didn’t go because I was in a band playing for another prom. We played a lot of Beatle songs, Young Rascals, Everly Brothers, Neil Diamond and even some Elvis. The best part of the dance was when 6 or 7 girls came over to my side of the stage and had a leg contest. They were all wearing seamed nylons & one of the other guys in the band got some beautiful pictures.I hated having to read a particular book for a book report.I enjoyed a book more if it was one I picked to read.
I went to the senior prom with Jeanne. Years later when I came home from work, my wife said to me, “You won’t believe who signed her two kids up for swimming lessons today!” (We had an in ground pool at home and my wife being a certified life guard and instructor, taught swimming classes at our suburban home.)
Anyway, I asked who it was and low and behold it was Jeanne, who unbeknownst to us, lived only a few blocks away!
I never went to my prom. Everybody said I would regret it if I didn’t go.It’s now 4 years later and I don’t regret it one little bit.I live in the UK. We have “Senior Proms” here too.
The prom is only fun if you have a driver’s license and a vehicle to drive. My parents were not going to allow that. Driving without a license was ok, but on prom night, they checked. Prom is highly overrated – you can get lucky on a study night, so why bother?
“Lord Jim?”I always laugh when I hear that title. There used to be a Fern bar in San Francisco called that back in the 1980’s.Went in there once….turned around and walked back out. I knew I didn’t belong in that place.

I did. With Judy. I hope she is well. It has been 48+ years since, both taking different directions.

Senior prom would have been a great opportunity to revel in my solitude while thinking about how much money I didn’t have.

Snoopy is the best dancer in town but he usually dances alone (or with his supper dish……)
