The elementary school I went to in the mid to late 60’s was a high school in the 50’s and still had the fall out shelter signs in the basement lunchroom.
Every Monday at 12-noon, the siren would go off and we’d dive under our desks, with our hands over the backs of our necks: Duck and Cover, kids! And the school just seven miles from where nuclear subs are moored. I’m pretty sure, we’re inches from Ground Zero! Now when I see those desks, I’m amazed I was ever that small!

Makes the bodies easier to find and identify when the cleanup crews come through, provided the seating chart is in the grade book.

We are all set. We bought a couple of those old desks, cheap.

Amazing how much gum was under those desks in second grade.

I think they desks were more intended for protection against earthquakes than bombs.
