Thereās no such word as āalright.ā Itās an ignorant corruption of the phrase āall right.ā Why would an intelligent, educated, experienced writer put āalrightā into dialog? Using it in prose to highlight or mock someoneās ignorance is fine, but to use it in dialog, where, supposedly, itās heard but not seen, makes no sense UNLESS the writer actually believes that āalrightā is a legitimate word, which it isnāt, thus making the writerās intelligence, education, and experience suspect.
āSimilar āmergedā words such as altogether and already have been accepted in standard English for a very long time, so there is no logical reason to object to the one-word form alright.ā ā http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/
