There’s a place in Laguna Beach, CA called the Royal Hawaiian that this reminds me of. They were voted “restaurant of the year” several times, and I remember standing in lines that went halfway down the block to get in. Last time I went back was just a couple of years ago, and they are still going strong.

There was a great place in Columbus, Ohio called The Kahiki that is now closed. The Mai Kai is still kicking in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, I think.
