    Yes, in the USA, it’s a felony punishable by years in a federal prison - “lying” to a federal officer. Even a mistake or misunderstanding may be construed as lying, if the courts so rule. People are strongly advised to never answer a federal official’s questions without an attorney present, especially those people with “nothing to hide”. You may not really know anything about whatever he is asking, but your answers may come back to haunt you later. Remember, they are trained to mislead you and can lie all they want, but you are only a US citizen, and and do not have the rights they do.
