Paul Trap got it wrong. According to BB-8’s Facebook page (yes, it has one), R2-D2 is it’s FATHER, not mother.
“I am a co-star in the new Star Wars saga, my “roll” in the film is groundbreaking for robots. Father is R2-D2, estranged mother is an MSE-6."
