Oddly, just the other day, somewhere on this site, I quoted MAD magazine putting words into Nixon’s mouth along the above lines, to wit: “You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but here’s where I make a liar out of Lincoln!”

You don’t need to fool all the people all the time. You only need to fool 51% of the 55% who vote once every 4 years. Even then, the people are only allowed to choose between the candidates that you have already pre-selected, so it’s a false choice anyway. If people start to get cranky about this, just run the printing presses and sedate them with fake money. Nobody is fooled, but nobody has the will to resist.
