Wallace: I watched a documentary about the universe. Did you know that one day the sun is going to explode?!?
Mr. McClellan: And yet, I still hafta go to work tomorrow.
Wallace: As if homework didn't seem pointless enough!
Well, it’ll sort of explode in the sense it has enough mass to helium flash…which is KIND OF an explosion…but yeah, it doesn’t so much explode as drift apart into a planetary nebula.Either way, not for about another four or five billion years at least by current estimates.
Night-Gaunt49 and Scyphi are both right, of course; the sun is not massive enough to “explode” (i. e., supernova). Makes me wonder about the “documentary about the universe” the kid was watching.

The Sun will turn into a red giant and after that becomes a white dwarf.
