When folks ask me “how are you doing?” I respond “better than I deserve”. My response is a actually a prayer of thankfulness for the gifts that I’ve been given. I imagine that “Doing better than I deserve” as a tombstone epithet would turn a few heads.
Reminds me of the episode of JAG where Harm and Mac are making their escape in a jet fighter of some description. Old hat to Harm, who had been a pilot; quite the stomach-churner to Mac, who I don’t think had ever flown in a fighter before, much less one pulling the evasive maneuvers Harm was pulling. When she advised him she was getting nauseated, he dropped a line on her that I’m sure a lot of guys would have loved to drop on her at some point or other: “Suck it up, Marine!”
