Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for November 19, 2015
November 18, 2015
November 20, 2015
Transcript:
Marigold: Look at that ancient creature, with its many horns. So ostentatious. Who does it think it is? Flaunting those extra horns, as if it is sooooo fancy.
Phoebe: This is a weird side of you.
Marigold: Jealous? I am not jealous.
The strange thing about this comic strip is that no one reacts with shock that a talking mythical creature is in their midst. They just act as if it’s perfectly normal to have a unicorn around.
Once I went to the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, with its collection of Middle Eastern antiquities. One item was a stele (pronounced like “steel” — a carved monument) which depicted in one panel several animals, including something that was probably a gazelle but was depicted in such a severe profile it was as if one horn was blocking the other. I couldn’t help but think “Unicorn!”

Unicorns never lived in the Cretaceous, did they, Dana Simpson?

That dismissive, contemptuous look that Marigold is making in the third panel is priceless!

If you have to say you’re not jealous, you’re not “not jealous.”

Horn envy? I wonder how she feels about cows and Gazelles?

It’s a good thing the museum doesn’t have a Styrachosarus skeleton on display.

Couldn’t Phoebe’s unicorn just zap herself an extra horn or two with her magic?

Reminds me of a sign I spotted and photoed a while back: “Rhinos are just fat unicorns.”

Hey, Marigold, Triceratops might be ostentatious, but it’s also extinct, and you’re not. So you got THAT going for you. Which is nice.

I expect the Shield Of Boringness works like the Somebody Else’s Problem field.
HAL69 over 9 years ago
Indeed. When Marigold turns the Shield down, any eyes gazing upon her would likely freeze because of the sparkles.
