I wonder why we say “dead as a door nail.” I think a better expression would be “dead as a coffin nail.” It’s no more or less accurate, but has a more poetic connotation.
Thinking of leaving little “calling cards,” Grim Reaper? Like Paladin’s famed “Have Gun, Will Travel” cards? Cute. Maybe not sufficiently scary if the Chosen doesn’t recognize a door nail….
What Pedmar said earlier, was almost exactly what is said in the opening of A Christmas Carol.
Marley was dead as a doornail. Mind, I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a doornail, I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors in in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the country’s done for.
I’ve played both Scrooge and Marley in various local productions.

Door nails are dead and deadly, good tools for the Reaper.

It’s comforting to think that death would take care of those small things.
