I wouldn’t be too nuts about the suet, either: “Bird feed is commonly used in the form of cakes of suet, which can be made with other solid fats, such as lard. Rolled oats, bird seed, cornmeal, raisins, and unsalted nuts are often incorporated into the suet cakes.” (Quote from Wikipedia.)

Suet cake holders cost about two bucks at the hardware store and the suet cakes two or three dollars and can last for several weeks—they’re a cheap way to get to see the birds. The squirrels will go after them unless you get the kind with chili oil—the birds can’t taste it and the squirrels won’t go near it. But it is very strong—wash your hands after touching it, don’t rub your eyes like I once did. Ow ow ow.
