I normally cut myself with the packaging, not the knife.
I have a pair of tin-snips in the toolbox that does a dandy job on that crap.
I did almost exactly that about 6 months ago. (different finger) No stitches, but I still have trouble with it.
I saw a video clip on how to use a can opener on these.
