Red: Mom, Rover and I are going into space! Wish us luck.
Carol: Please be careful. Space is dangerous.
Red: Mommm. A ship in a harbor is safe but that's not what ships were made for
We visited the Cape area the following summer. Not to belittle the severity of the tragedy, but it was very quiet and depressing when you realized how many people were out of work because of the incident…
Apollo 1, Jan 27, 1967, (49 years ago)Challenger, Jan 28, 1986 (30 years ago)
“There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again. "JFK speech at Rice University, September 12, 1962
I did not realize it was 30 years today on that event. But I do remember that day. It changed my outlook. We’d just came out of this awful meeting here at work. We were all aggravated about forthcoming changes and all kind of depressed. When we heard what happened I just remember thinking “Wow……. what we deal with is nothing compared to that”. Since that day I quit letting any work related ‘crap’ bother me. I am retiring this March with over 41 years here. I can truly say this ‘place’ hasn’t upset me one time since 1986.
I flew from Michigan to Fort Myers, FL that awful day. You could see the cloud that had been the Challenger in the sky. It was dreadful. I will never forget it. RIP, brave Challenger crew.
He’s still reliving the Mercury missions? I thought this strip had established that they were already up to Apollo. Or did this strip recycle and I missed the reentry?

I flew my box to all 9 planets. (Yes, there ARE 9) Perhaps more like Spaceman Spiff.

I love that Rover has his tail through the box spaceship to provide the acceleration flame!

A very nice tribute to the crew of the Challenger. Hard to believe it’s been 30 years.

We ‘flew’ over the Atlantic once using controls on the range/oven in the kitchen. Mom was not too pleased with us! (we only did it once too!)

And, btw, what a great Mom! No belittling, no patronizing, just an appropriate “Mom” send-off. You are VERY fortunate, Red and Rover.

Yes, the last panel is priceless—a hole for Rover’s tail, and it says “danger exhaust.” Love it!
