I’ve never seen this: What if you make an easy feeder for the squirrels, and a harder one for the birds? Does that do any good? (Yes, I’m ignoring geese for now).
The squirrels here took off with 3 suet feeders so far this year, they’d climb on the porch rail, reach out, knock it off onto the ground and drag them away. Finally had to go with a super long swivel deck hook and squirrel proof feeders for the birds and I have a squirrel feeding station elsewhere….
The Squirrel Technology Research Center will find a way into any bird feeder made, believe me. In my neighborhood, they are rumored to be developed small hang gliders.
“They can’t get to my feeder.”.Sounds like you got it all figured out, all righty. But squirrel super-scientists reading this comic are already figuring a way to get around your setup. You have issued them a challenge! I predict one of these days you’ll look out the window and take a whip-lash double-take at a squirrel cramming its mouth full on your feeder, and other squirrels cheering him on. He’ll smirk at you and give you the paw. To the end of his days, my father enjoyed the antics and ingenuity of those screwy squirrels.
We tried that. The squirrels learned how to hold onto the pole, grab the edge of the deflector and swing themselves up.Next, we mounted a slinky on the pole. It was great fun to watch squirrels bounce up and down and fall off. Then, one day, I looked out to discover a squirrel onto of the feeder. Later, I watched that squirrel time his climbing to the slinky’s bounce.Setting out two feeder – on to attract the squirrels away from the other has been our best solution.
Hands down, the ‘owner’ of our feeder is a red-bellied woodpecker. Everyone shares until he shows up. Even the squirrels give the woodpecker’s long pointy beak a wide berth.

I throw out peanuts on the ground for the squirrels and I grease the bird feeder pole with vaseline.

To quote what Milton Berle used to do on live TV when he about to give good zinger was…“are you want to hear the punchline?”
