SIlly cartoonist, the NCAA wouldn’t dare bring the death penalty on U$C or any other BCS school with long traditions and big successes in football and basketball.
Nowadays, the NCAA saves the death penalty for only the little schools who play the little sports. The NCAA has brought the hammer down on a school twice after they did it to SMU.
The death penalty is needed for the NCAA. An outdated organization with outdated rules. If you dig deep enough into any major college sports power you will find rule breaking and bending. The simple reason is that the rules are some Pollyanna exercise without any touch of reality. Kids are barred from competition at the professional level and yet are asked to risk life and limb for little or no compensation. Don’t kid yourselves about the academic reward. Those kids are there to play their sport and education is just the bonus for those of them that can handle it.
re: academic reward. Take the case of Myron Rolle, the Rhodes scholar who delayed entering the NFL for 2 years so he could study at Oxford. He dropped from probably a late-1st-round or early-2nd-round pick to a 6th round pick. Part of it was fears that he’d lost his conditioning while studying abroad, but several coaches and GMs said off-the-record that they were afraid he was too smart for the NFL.
Personally, if I was a member of the NFLPA I’d be PISSED if any coach said that, as it makes it sound like you have to be dumb to play.
If Pete Carroll could come back? You know he’s coming back. Seattle’s terrible, he doesn’t have that much success in the NFL, and the track record for successful college coaches in the NFL make his return to D-1 football inevitable.
The real question is what AD would be stupid enough to risk their football program for a few years of success when Carroll gets fired?
