Had the same problem and put a bungee cord on the can tops, and that’s that. Then the raccoons started emptying the humming bird feeders and the bird feeders. They actually climbed up the corner of the garage and jumped on my flag pole. I just moved the feeders, sprayed WD-40 on the wall and downspout, and problem solved. They are persistent and cleaver!!
We did the WD-40 on bird feeder poles and while it worked for a while, we ended up with a gummy, dirty pole. After 20 years of feeding birds and fighting squirrels, we gave up.
we have a cat someone down the street abandoned when they moved—he now “owns” our yard (yes we feed him), so now we do not have a squirrel problem. after the city started using those 90-gallon rollaround bins, raccoons only show up as road kill anymore.
