Girl: Better grab a bucket, Frazz! Mrs. Olsen says she has burst a whitefish! Frazz: Bursitis, I'm guessing. Girl: That makes more sense and I don't even know what it means. Frazz: A big vocabulary can simplify the world.
We were in the habit of referring to our female dog as “bitch” when our young nephew, maybe four years old, was visiting. We were trying hard not to use language his mother wouldn’t approve of. At one point my wife did an emergency self-correction into pig latin: “Itch-bay”. Nephew, unfamiliar with the word “bay”, heard it as “Itch bag”.
“Itch-bag” became one of our pet names for that dog for the rest of her life.
The danger lies when those with a poorer vocabulary misunderstand and misconstrue the meaning, as witness the controversy that arose a couple of years ago when a public figure complained about stinginess by describing an allotment (correctly) as “a niggardly amount.”

Or overcomplicate it. .I appeal, beg, beseech, pray, desire, solicit, petition you to reconsider that opinion.

Puts me in mind of Baldric on Black Adder writing his “magnificent octopus”.
