If I don't feed the baby the right food, she won't be a well-adjusted adult. If I don't read her the right books, she'll be an emotionally hollow adult. If I don't sing her the right songs, she'll be a stressed adult. If I don't play for the right media she'll be a depressed adult. Why are your parents miserable all the time? Oh, I think that's just what it's like when you grow up.

I read a news story years ago about a single father who was so obsessed with forming the best intellectual quality of his infant daughter that he totally controlled her life: Nothing but classical music, literary classics, the best museums, intense exposure to all scientific fields. I guess he took his cue from John Stuart Mill’s father. And like J. S. Mill, she had a psychological reaction. She ran away from him, and eventually became a teacher.
