There’s a great Asimov story set “in the future” where a guy is considered a genius ’cuz he can do arithmetic with a pencil and paper w/o using a calculator
I remember six-digit numbers, eventually followed by replacing the first two with three different ones. Our exchange went from CHerry to LIberty-6. Long distance was by operator only.
I remember when you just turned the crank and told the operator who you wanted to talk to. Of course it was a party line and news got around fast. Our ring was one long and two short.

I remember when it was just 7 digits. No area code. Party lines. Before that judge broke up Ma Bell. Simpler times.

The Dogs are fortunate to be in a smaller community. Six area codes for local calls here; ten digit dialing is the norm.

I spent the early Eighties in a housing development that still used six-digit dialing.

I know all 7 numbers of a phone number too! Not including the beginning 3. How about you, Will the Pitbull?
