Lucy was complex and confusing at times, but I never figured out why people think she was a bad person. She actually cared about people. Now Violet — that was another story. She got worse each year. I have been surprised to see how gentle her character could be in these early years, because by the time I started reading the strips, I couldn’t stand her.
