Back in the day, most half hour shows were about 24 or 25 minutes long. Hour shows were about 50 minutes. These days they cut out parts of the shows so they can get all of the commercials in that they put in them. Watch an old show on DVD and if the show is complete, you can see how long the shows used to be and figure from that how much the commercial content has increased over the years. When BBC America shows reruns of Star Trek, it takes them about 1 hour and 10 minutes to show the uncut show and still get in all of the commercials they show these days.
