In perverse way this makes sense. I guess it’s more fun for Pig-Pen to get dirty when he can actually see he’s getting dirty. When he’s already extremely dirty he can’t tell if he’s added any new dirt or if it’s what’s already there.
Had to finally look up Pigpen on Wikipedia, but now I understand why he just doesn’t look right here — in the later years that I remember his hair wasn’t so thick and dark. Also, his nose was bigger.

I remember having to clean the bathtub after my brother had a bath…there were often mud banks in the tub.
